AMMF’s 2026 Hepatobiliary (HPB) Nurse Study Day took place on 12 May at the Radisson Blu Hotel, London Stansted Airport.
This second Hepatobiliary (HPB) Nurse Study Day organised by AMMF and co-chaired by two members of AMMF’s CNS Advisory Board, Sabita Maharaj and Nina Dainty from University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, brought together HPB Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs), allied professionals and speakers from UK centres to share practical insights on complex cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) pathways.
Topics and highlights on the day
Key topics on the day highlighted that surgery and liver transplantation remain the only potentially curative options, but many patients do not proceed along a curative pathway due to clinical and system-level barriers. This reinforces the role of CNSs in tracking pathways, identifying delays early, and preparing patients and families when planned surgery or transplant may not go ahead.
A dedicated session on palliative care clarified the distinction between palliative and end‑of‑life care and provided language and strategies for earlier, needs‑based referral and honest advance care planning alongside active treatment.
Building on last year’s focus on stenting, the 2026 programme again reviewed what CNSs need to know about biliary drainage, with a focus on techniques and practical post‑procedural care.
Nurse‑led models of care and support were a key topic, highlighting how the cancer support worker (CSW) role is being embedded within CCA pathways to bridge tertiary and local services, allowing CNSs to focus on complex clinical aspects of care. The value of the CNS role itself was reinforced from multiple perspectives throughout the day, including a powerful patient perspective on the management, wisdom and kindness of CNSs.
Interactive sessions addressed healthcare disparities through recognising cultural differences, followed by a breakout activity to identify key learning priorities and resource needs to support nursing practice. Key priorities included education on biliary drainage, equitable access to specialist support, and clear long-term follow-up for people with CCA.
