AMMF’s Virtual 2021 European Cholangiocarcinoma Conference

Highlights from AMMF’s Virtual European Cholangiocarcinoma Conference 2021

AMMF’s BASL-endorsed annual cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) conference was held virtually for the first time this year.  On 13–14 May 2021 AMMF brought together an expert faculty and speakers to deliver an engaging online event which had a specific European focus.

The conference was open for all with an interest in CCA, including specialists, scientists, researchers, patients and carers. A total of 620 delegates from six continents registered and over the two days, 26 presentations were delivered, plus 10 live Q&A sessions. Throughout both days, HCPs could visit the virtual poster hall to see and hear  17 poster presentations, and also visit the exhibition hall to meet  AMMF’s sponsors, supporters and representatives of fellow CCA societies from around the world.

Day One: CCA Overviews, diagnosis and treatment updates

Highlights on Day One included updates on the AMMF Data Project which is showing a robust evidence base around diagnostic and treatment pathways for CCA in England. Data from this project also strengthens the case for dedicated Centres of Expertise, which was covered in another insightful presentation. The much-anticipated presentation on transplantation highlighted that with careful patient selection and rigorous treatment protocols, liver transplantation for CCA is possible and is now planned to be an option in the near future.

There was an extremely useful Nutrition session for patients and carers, plus an Ask the Expert sessions with a world class panel.

Also looking to the future, the transition towards precision medicine was explored, with updates on molecular profiling and targeted therapy for CCA.

Day Two: International aspects of CCA and scientific updates

On the second day of the conference, delegates heard presentations from China, Southeast Asia, across Europe and the Netherlands. These international insights, together with the presentation on the work and initiatives of the European Network for the study of Cholangiocarcinoma (ENS-CCA) highlighted the ongoing and increasing collaboration in the field.

Scientific updates were delivered by researchers from six of the projects funded by AMMF and these, as well as the scientific updates on experimental modelling, shone a light on the efforts that are being made to understand the complexity of CCA and to develop new diagnostic tools and therapies which will hopefully lead to improved patient outcomes.
